About
MUV Committee
We
encourage everyone that participates in
the manned quest, evolution and exploration of
the underwater world through use of submersible vehicles to become an
MTS member. The range of issues is broad
from the type of submersibles
applications from research to Tourism
and Military to issues of industry
regulations, instrumentation
technologies, exploration logistics and
pilot training. Take a moment to
consider the benefits of participating
in a Committee of your peers that
represents every discipline of the
diverse industry of Manned Submersibles.
Whether you are a commercial or research
operator, manufacturer, engineer,
scientist, educator, historian, explorer
or fascinated bystander, the Manned
Underwater Vehicles Committee of the
Marine Technology Society is here to
serve you.
Definition
Manned
Submersibles:
Any subsea vehicle that has a one
atmosphere cabin for human occupancy and
is dependent on a surface support
vessel.
Manned
access of the ocean has fascinated
society for hundreds of years. Humans
have a natural fear of the unknown and
destroy that which they fear. The ocean
has been and remains a mystery to a
large extent and this “unknown”
element is at the root of many ocean
management problems we face today. The
road to better management of our oceans
is through knowledge and understanding
of this vast world. This can only happen
through familiarization, a process that
predicates the need to have access. This
need for familiar access is at the core
of the future for manned submersibles.
The 20th century has played
an important role in history by opening
up the oceans to human exploration. A
large number of scientific Manned
Submersibles were built during the
1960's, technological advancements in
the 80's and 90's have produced many new vehicles
which continue
to push the boundaries of this ultimate
access.
